Pregnant Women have been advised to visit the nearest hospital for anti natal care ANC and delivery to avoid anemia and other complications.

A Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology College of Health Sciences Aminu Kano teaching hospital Professor Hadiza Galadanci made the disclosure during an exclusive interview with Radio Nigeria in Kano.

Professor Galadanci who doubles as the Director Africa Center of Excellence for Population Health and Policy Bayero university Kano pointed out that,women that go for ANC receive drugs that would improve their health,while a skilled birth attendant can detect problems during delivery such as excessive bleeding and other complications.

She stressed that a research conducted by Professors from Nigeria, Birmingham, Tanzania, Kenya and South Africa initiated a new method of using drapes to detect the level of blood loss during birth.

The director pointed out that, the method has yielded positive results as it was used across 40 healthcare facilities across the five countries, where the rate of excessive bleeding during birth was reduced by 60%.

Professor Galadanci explained that the study also recommended that all four interventions of uterus massage,use of oxytocin drug, IV fluid and examination of the uterus should be done at once within 15 minutes.

She emphasized the need for healthcare workers to use the drape and desist from delay in taking the Women to the theatre for necessary action.

The director maintained that excessive bleeding due to childbirth known as Postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) continues to be a problem due to missed or delayed diagnosis, missed or delayed treatment and missed or delayed escalation of refractory PPH.
