NSSEC Committed To Improved Performance In Mathematics, English Language – Executive Secretary

National Senior Secondary Education Commission NSSEC , says it is committed to addressing poor performances in mathematic and english language courses in senior secondary schools through training and capacity building of teachers .

Executive Secretary of the commission Dr Tyela Ajayi disclosed this during the opening ceremony of a capacity building training for selected english and mathematics teachers in senior secondary schools within the North West Zone of Nigeria which took place in Kano.

He said the aim of the training was to build the capacity of teachers with modern skills, so that they can impart the needed knowledge on the students with the aim of ensuring that they passed the subjects during their final examinations in secondary schools across the nation.

Dr Tyela Ajayi noted that as part of its mandate of ensuring minimum standard in senior secondary schools, the Commission developed a teaching manual for mathematics and english language teachers to enhance their methodology and pedagogical skills in the two core subjects.

“there is a ray of challenges that some Teachers of Mathematics and English language have the habit of skipping certain topics just because they cannot teach them and thus making students to lack of understanding in such topics. Hence, the persistent poor performance of leaners during examinations.”

The executive secretary added that the National Senior Secondary Education Commission remains committed to ensuring quality education delivery with best global practices.

In his remarks ,the Kano State Commissioner of Education Alhaji Umar Haruna Doguwa represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry , Hajiya Kubra Imam said the capacity building training was very timely.

He maintained that Kano State Government was according much priority to the educational sector , geared towards facilitating a bright future for students.

Hajara Mahmoud and Tasi’u Auwal who were participants at the training from Kano and Jigawa states ,applauded the federal government for organizing the training, stressing that they will make adequate utilization of the opportunity to achieve the desired goals.
