Reps Urges NEDC To End Water Scarcity In Gombe LG

House of Representatives has urged the North East Development Commission (NEDC) to provide a lasting solution to the menace of water scarcity in Dukku Dukku Local Government Area of Gombe State.

This was part of the resolutions adopted by the House in a motion by a member from Gombe State, Alhaji Abdullahi El-Rasheed and nine other members during a plenary session.

Alhaji Abdullahi El-Rasheed, explained that Dukku local Government has a long history of water scarcity that has continued to impacted negatively on production, animal husbandry and the economic prosperity of people with the worst affected areas situated on the upper part of River Gongola.

Dukku Local Government Area has a long history of water scarcity that has continued to be a huge problem to the people and have also negatively impacted on their economic prosperity as it affects farming and animal husbandry with the worst affected areas situated on the upper part of river Gongola;

He said the importance of water to human life can never be over emphasized as the United Nations General Assembly in 2010, explicitly recognized human right to water and sanitation where everyone has the right to sufficient, safe, acceptable, physically accessible and affordable water for personal and domestic use.

The lawmaker expressed concerned that successive State and Local Government leaders have demonstrated an unwavering commitment towards bringing a lasting solution to the menace of water scarcity in Dukku, but to no avail thereby leaving the situation unsloved.

Alhaji El-Rasheed, emphasized that various water tributaries that passed through the available grazing reserves in the area have not been utilized to create modern and sustainable earth dams that can provide adequate water reserves all year round.

He maintained that if adequate measures were not put in place to bring a lasting solution to the water scarcity in Dukku, the communities and herds will be left with no option than to migrate to other areas with availability of water which will lead to food insecurity as it will greatly affect farming activities.

Adopting the motion, the House mandated the North East Development Commission NEDC to construct an all-encompassing water supply project comprising of boreholes, boosting stations, collection/distribution channel from Mayo-Lamido to Dukku town and its environs.
