Reps Call For State Of Emergency In Plateau LG

House of Representatives has called on the National Security Adviser to declare state of emergency in Mangu, Plateau State over the killing of 300 people.

The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance by a member from Plateau State, Mr Dachung Baggos during a plenary session presided by the Speaker Dr Abbas Tajuddeen.

Mr Dachung Baggos, said recent attacks on people of Mangu Local Government and neighbouring communities have left more than 300 persons dead, dozens seriously injured, property destroyed and over 18, 000 people displaced at different IDP camps.

The lawmaker also confirmed that most of the victims that sustained various degrees of injuries are currently receiving medical attention at different hospitals within Plateau State.

He expressed concern that the continuous attacks by terrorist groups on communities in Plateau State if not addressed immediately will lead to low farming yield which will worsen the existing food uncertainty in the communities in the State.

While adopting the motion, the House also urged the Inspector General of Police to immediately provide Mobile Police Force Squadron formation in the affected communities to safeguard their lives and maintain peace and order.

The House however, urged the security operatives to provide aerial surveillance and support to flush out terrorists and destroy their camps to avoid reoccurrence and allow innocent farmers to return to their farms and ancestral homes.

The legislators also called on the Secretary to the Government of the Federation to direct the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other relevant bodies to immediately provide relief materials to victims of the attacked.
