Kaduna Electric says the humongous debt owed it by customers across its franchise for energy consumed, the spate of vandalism of power assets and energy theft are some reasons affecting power supply situation.

This was made known by the Head of Corporate Communication, Abdulazeez Abdullahi, in Kaduna on Thursday.

According to him, in the past three months, the company’s Kaduna North Zone comprising Doka, Jaji, Millennium City, Kawo, Sabon Gari, Samaru, and Zaria City Area Offices recorded just 30% collection after electricity worth over N6 billion is consumed within the period but only N1.8 billion recovered from customers.

He said in Kaduna South Zone comprising Barnawa, Makera, Tudun Wada, Mando, Kafancan, Rigasa and Gonin Gora Area Offices also sold energy worth N6.4 billion within the three month period but only collected about N1.8 billion which translates to a mere 29% collection efficiency.

At the Sokoto Zone comprising of Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states with energy worth over N5.6 billion barely made a total N1.6 billion in the months under review.

Abdulazeez Abdullahi lamented the menace of energy theft and vandalism that have become major drain pipes of the company’s resources.

These challenges are what have contributed to the current power supply situation in Kaduna, Sokoto, Zamfara and Kebbi states”

The Head called for the cooperation of all stakeholders including community and religious leaders, security agencies and governments at all levels to help drive the needed change in attitude of customers towards a better power sector.
