Zamfara NUJ Moves To Protect Journalism Profession

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Zamfara State Council has moved to protect the image of journalism profession in the State as it inaugurates ethics and disciplinary committee to ensure sanity amongst members.

In a welcome address by the chairman of the NUJ Zamfara state council, comrade Ibrahim Musa Maizare said the committee was established to address any form of irregularity among members that may arise.

“We have carefully selected reputable veterans who worked and left a landmark in the profession to serve as members of the Committee”, the chairman said.

He therefore appealed to all journalists in the State to accord the committee maximum support to discharge its mandate effectively.

In his speech, chairman of the occasion Abdulrazak Bello Kaura, Zonal Secretary of the NUJ Zone A explained that, establishment of the ethics and disciplinary committee as enshrined in the Union’s constitution would further sanitize operation of journalists in the state and call for professionalism in the coverage of 2023 general elections and other activities.

On his part, the guest speaker at the event and former commissioner of information, Honourable Ibrahim Muhammad Danmadamin Birnin Magaji who was one time chairman of the state council of the NUJ stressed that the beauty of any profession or system depends largely on the standard of ethics governing its conducts and activities.

Mr. Ibrahim who presented a paper titled “The Role of Media Ethics in achieving Secure Society” noted that “Even a layman in every setting can attest to the fundamental contributions of the ethical media to societal growth, nation building and global development, saying that media ethics helps in real life and in every strata of the society.

While inaugurating the committee, the commissioner Zamfara State ministry of information, Ibrahim Magaji Dosara who was represented by the chairman of the state Censorship Board, Nasir Sani Maqari called on the committee members to justify the trust reposed on them.

In their separate remarks, Head of Zamfara State civil service, Kabiru Muhammad Gayari represented by Permanent Secretary, Yusuf Bakura; Special adviser to Zamfara State Governor on Media, enlightenment and communication, Malam Zailani Bappa commended the Union however pleaded to sustain the good working relationship and support it in its activities.

The inaugurated ethics and disciplinary committee have Alhaji Tanko Khalil as Chairman; Bashir Sanda Gusau; Aliyu Adamu Tsafe; Usman Muhd Maru; Ibrahim Muhammad Kanoma; Kefas Dogonyaro; Abdullahi Adamu and Aisha Abdullahi Ja’o as members while Halliru MB Umar was appointed as Secretary of the committee.

Abdulrazak Kaura
