Written by Godwin Duru

A United Nations support project implemented by Dinidari Africa has advocated for the establishment of functional committees and an enforcement quota mechanism by political parties to ensure that women emerge as flag bearers during party primaries.

Communications Associate with the UN Women Political Empowerment Project Clara Jack made the call at a validation meeting organized by Dinidari Africa Project in Kaduna.

She said the issue of women inclusion in politics should go beyond theory to practical implementation of the issues which have been the struggle by women.

Ms Clara Jack noted that the project does not only focus on the 2023 elections but for the future of political development in the country.

In a presentation, an educationist Mrs. Racheal Aisha Akinbehin outlined objectives of the project to include, assessing the trend of women participation in political party activities, identify their barriers and also capacity needs for participation in politics and political party gender inclusivity.

Mrs. Aisha Akinbehin however admitted that the trend was gradually changing , looking at the women candidates fielded by some of the political parties in the current political dispensation up to the post of Deputy Governorship candidate which she said was a great achievement.

Some of the participants who spoke to Radio Nigeria, Hajiya Risikat Toyin Muhammad and Aisha Mohammed Ahmed lamented low level of inclusion of people with disability in politics and also appealed to Nigerians to vote women into elective position so that they can be part of the decision makers in the country.
