The Chairman of the Chadian Transitional Military Council, Mahamat Idris Derby Itno, is to lead the Lake Chad Basin Commission for a four-year period.

The decision, which was taken today at the end of the Lake Chad Basin Commission Summit in Abuja, followed the expiration of the tenure of President Buhari, who chaired the Commission from 2018 until now.

Accepting the responsibility, General Mahamat Itno, said he would justify the trust and confidence reposed in him by building on the solid foundation laid by the founding fathers of the Commission, and exploring effective strategies and partnerships to bring about the much-desired peace, stability, and development being pursued.

The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Ambassador Mamman Nuhu, also got his tenure extended.
