The Federal and state government have been urged to scale up social investment programmes in communities affected by Boko Haram insurgency to minimise cases of gender based violence.
Equally, the United Nations has been requested to facilitate the involvement of women in all aspects of post-conflict reconstruction, reconciliation and peace building architecture.
These are some of the recommendations issued at a validation workshop on post-conflict programmes on gender equality in North East Nigeria organised by UN Women in Maiduguri.
Lead researcher of the technical team Mrs Mabel Ade observed that women in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states bear the burden of caring for their families thereby depleting their economic power.
According to her, despite the enabling laws protecting rights of women and children, the two vulnerable groups have been subjected to severe cases of human rights violations in the region.
“In all the 3 locations, loss of livelihoods, poverty, women doing men’s job, defilement of babies and under aged girls and use of women and girls as explosives targets increased after the conflict ” Ade said.
The researcher recommended the establishment of a trust fund to facilitate the smooth administration of justice.
Programme Manager UN Women Lilian Unaegbu said the document will promote gender related issues in the North East.
She thanked women led organisations and all those who participated in the research.
