Federal Government has reiterated its commitment towards delivering its mandates on the rights of older persons in society..

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Dr Nasir Gwarzo made this known in Abuja, at an event organized by the National Senior Citizen Centre to commemorate this year’s World Elder Abuse Day.

Dr Gwarzo, represented by the Director, Administration, Hajiya Zainab Yusuf gave assurance that the ministry would address the plights and abuses on the elderly in the society.

Director-General, National Senior Citizen Centre, Dr Emem Omokaro commended the President Muhammadu Buhari was introducing policy and roadmap for improving the lives of the senior citizens in the country.

She explained that the world elder abuse awareness day was set aside by the United Nations to create awareness on abuses faced by older persons and design framework at finding lasting solutions for their course.

President of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Comrade Christopher Isiguzo appealed to the Federal Government to hasten up the establishment of the Senior Citizens Centre at the states level and local governments.

He applauded the centre also for the establishment of its Press Corps for awareness creation of its activities across the country.
