The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) SUPER 6 has ended in Benin City with Bayelsa Queens of Yenagoa crowned winners of the women’s premiership.
Bayelsa Queens finished on top of the log, which saw the 6 competing teams play a mini-league format, with a maximum of 15 points from 5 matches.
Following closely is Nasarawa Amazons of Lafia who trailed in second soot with 12 points, from 4 wins.
Ahead of the grand finale of the Super 6, on Sunday, the Chairperson of the NWFL, Aisha Falode, supervised the last Pre-Match Meetings, held on Saturday afternoon, preparatory to the final rounds of matches.
At the meeting, Ms. Falode announced that the closing ceremony of the season-ending tournament would start at 2 pm at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium with valuable items to be given to early spectators.
In all, 3 matches were played on Sunday, starting with the 10 am fixture which saw Naija Ratels of Abuja beaten 0-1 by Delta Queens of Asaba at the University of Benin Ugbowo Campus; at 12 noon.
Edo Queens drew goalless with Rivers Angels at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, and the final match between the two contenders for the title saw Bayelsa Queens edge Nasarawa Amazons 2-1 at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.
The finals capped proceedings at the week-long women’s football fiesta in the ancient Benin City.
Meanwhile, the story of the Super 6 won’t be complete without a mention of the stand-out player of the tournament, Gift Monday, and her goal poaching prowess, for Bayelsa Queens.
Clearly player of the competition by a mile, Gift Monday scored 12 goals in 5 matches for the Queens who takes over the mantle of NWFL Premiership crown from neighbours, Rivers Angels; while emulating their make folks, Bayelsa United who are at present, the reigning National Federation Cup winners.
Gift virtually swept the individual awards by winning the Golden Boot Award for highest goals of the season, Most Valuable Player of the tournament, and player of the match against Nasarawa Amazons.
Goalkeeper Bawou Ange Gabrielle of Bayelsa Queens won the Golden Gloves Award for the best keeper; while ₦5,000,000 was doled out to her team for winning the Super-6.
Nasarawa Amazon got ₦3,000,000 for finishing in the second spot; while the second runner-up was rewarded with ₦2,000,000.
With the great performances displayed by the players in the Super 6, it was evident that the women’s league is gradually on the ascendancy in terms of quality of play, organization.
