The University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital UMTH has commenced a detailed research on causes of kidney failure in Borno state.
Director Kidney Centre of the hospital, Professor Ibrahim Ummate made this known at an event to mark this year’s world kidney day in Maiduguri.
Professor Ummate who is also a professor of medicine and nephrology noted with concern the rising cases of renal failure in the state which informed the state government to call for a research on kidney disease with a view to addressing the prevalance rate.
He disclosed that the Centre has accessed the grant for the research from Borno state government with a time frame of one year.
Professor Ibrahim Ummate said the state currently has fourteen percent prevalance as against the national average of twelve percent.
According to Director of the Centre, most of the patients diagnosed with kidney disease are from Bulumkutu, Ngomari and Dala area of the metropolis, hence the need to start the campaign in the area.
“Next week we will start the real screening on the causes of kidney disease and early detection of the disease in Maiduguri and environs so that we submit our research findings and suggestions to the state government by end of the year” Professor Ummate said.
Professor Ummate called on the public to imbibe the habit of periodic medical screening so as to detect the disease from early stage.
District Head of Ngomari Airport Zannah Lawan Shuwa observed that kidney disease have claimed lives of many people in the area.
He lauded the effort of the state government and Teaching Hospital for embarking on the research and expressed hope that the outcome will bring relief to teeming vulnerable people in the state.
