Reps Seek Establishment Of Nigeria Centre For Vaccine Research

House of Representatives has passed for second reading a Bill for an Act to Establish Nigeria Centre for Vaccine Research and Development.

The Bill sponsored by Kasimu Maigari from Taraba state seeks to establish a research centre saddle with the responsibility of developing vaccines for ailments in the country.

Debating, the mover of the motion noted that Nigeria currently lacks a research centre that can develop vaccines to combat outbreaks of diseases.

He said in view of the enormous desire and commitment Nigeria had in the fight against killer diseases when established it would help in catering for the vaccine needs of other African counties.

In a submission, the house minority leader Ndudi Elumelu who described the motion as timely said this would reduce the nation’s dependency on foreign vaccines.

Also on his part, leader of the House, Alhassan Ado Doguwa said the piece of legislation would help Nigeria develop its vaccines in line with the genetic composition of its citizens.

After a debate the bill was referred to the house committee on health institutions for more legislative inputs.
