FG Committed To Eradicating Desertification – Minister

Federal Government has reaffirmed its determination to combat desertification in the eleven front line states of the Sahel Region in Nigeria.

Minister of State, Federal Miinistry of Environment Sharon Ikeazor stated this when she paid an inspection visit to a eucalyptus woodlot plantation at Kumbo and Fagwalawa villages all in Gabaswa and Makoda Local Government Areas of Kano State.

She said the ministry of was working towards ensuring that the mandate of the Great Green Wall (GGW) was fully achieved.

Sharon Ikeazor explained that the Ministry was working tirelessly in ensuring that twenty-five million trees were planted in various parts of the country, aimed at fighting desertification, increasing forest cover, and improving the livelihood of the people.

“In line with the mandate of the Great Green Wall, we are working tirelessly in ensuring that desertification is being combated in all parts of the Nation, we hope to replicate such interventions in parts of the nation”

The Minister added that the ministry had introduced a modern technology for cooking that would substitute the traditional way of cutting down trees for cooking geared towards curtailing the menace of desertification.

She commended the Great Green Wall for a job well done and urged the people of the communities where the woodlots were been planted to ensure adequate monitoring of the plantation aimed at ensuring that the stated goals were being achieved.

Speaking at the project site of woodlot in Tona Village, Makoda Local Government Area, the Director-General of the Great Green Wall Dr. Bukar Hassan said GGW was achieving a great milestone in addressing the challenge of desertification in the front line states of the Sahel Region.

During the inspection visit, the Minister commissioned a motorized borehole provided by the Great Green Wall At Government Girls Secondary School Gabasawa , in Gabasawa local Government Area of the State.
