Thirty people have been confirmed positive with Lassa fever in six local government areas of Bauchi State.

This follows a surge of the disease due to the recent harvest in this year’s farming season.

Executive Chairman, State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr Rilwanu Mohammed, gave the figure in an interactive with journalists on the current situation of the disease, held at the Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) in Bauchi.

Dr Mohammed said the local government areas include: Bauchi, Bogoro, Ganjuwa, Kirfi, Tafawa Balewa and Toro.

He explained that from January to December this year, the state has recorded 153 probable cases, out of which 136 were tested and eight people were confirmed dead.

Dr Mohammed said the state government was taking necessary measures towards ensuring safety of the people, stressing that the Agency was waiting for intervention of the State Governor to procure more drugs and injectables to handle the disease.

The Chairman called on people of the state to follow personal and environmental hygiene, in order to control the spread of Lassa fever and other communicable diseases.

On booster dose vaccination against Covid-19 Omicron variant, Dr Mohammed said the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) had approved 350,000 doses of Pfizer BioNtech vaccine for administration to those who have had their first and second doses of AstraZeneca and Moderna vaccines in the state.
