Kano state house of assembly has expressed readiness to expedite the speedy passage of the reviewed maternal and child health care bill to address prenatal and post natal problems in the state.

The Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Engineer Hamisu Ibrahim Chidari made the disclosure while declaring open a two day retreat organized for principal officers of the house organized by the Resource center for Human Rights and civic education with support from Misereor Germany, held in Kaduna.

In a statement signed by the director press and public affairs of the house Malam Uba Abdullahi, and made available to radio Nigeria in Kano, Hamisu Ibrahim Chidari expressed confidence that the outcome of the retreat would be adopted by the legislators.

He described the retreat as apt due to the high number of maternal mortality and morbidity bedevelling the country.

The speaker reaffirmed the house readiness to partner with relevant stakeholders in moving the state forward.

Earlier in his remarks, the executive director, resource center for Human Rights and civic education, Dr. Ibrahim Zikirullah explained that the center had reviewed the previous draft maternal health bill to encompass childcare.

He noted that, if passed into law, the bill would ensure inclusion, transparency and accountability on maternal health.

Similarly, the programme manager of Misereor Germany, Mr. Cosmos Olaniyan expressed optimism that the legislative retreat would map out laws that would be beneficial to all.

Series of paper presentations on ‘Draft revised maternal and child bill’ and ‘Key issues affecting maternal and child healthcare’ were part of activities at the two day retreat which would focus attention on how to reduce maternal mortality in the state.
