Director General of the Nigeria Meteorological Agency, NiMet, Professor Mansur Bako Matazu has been appointed as the Chairperson, Board of Governors of the African Centre of Meteorological Applications for Development, ACMAD.

This is contained in a congratulatory message by the Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika in Abuja.

Senator Hadi Sirika who notes that Professor Matazu’s latest appointment is worthy of commendation, lauded the NiMet boss for his commitment to public service since he assumed office as head of Nigeria’s National weather prediction organisation. 

It says: ‘’following the eighth extraordinary session of the ACMAD Board of Governors that took place virtually, Professor Mansur Bako Matazu was elected by the board members of ACMAD as the Chairperson to serve for a four year term’’.       

The statement adds that the African Centre of Meteorological Applications for Development, ACMAD is the Weather and Climate Centre with African continental competence.

It was created in 1987 by the Conference of Ministers of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa ,UNECA, and the World Meteorological Organisation. 

It stresses that ACMAD has been operational in Niamey since 1992 and comprises 53 Member States and functions primarily with meteorologists in Member States.

According to the statement Professor Mansur Bako Matazu’s Appointment as the Chairperson of ACMAD further solidifies Nigeria’s position as a reference point when meteorological issues in Africa and indeed the entire world is discussed.
