Hoodlums who are yet to be identified have on Sunday attacked the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC Head office in Awka, Anambra State

The incident which took place at about half past eight, Sunday evening caused heavy panic and pandemonium amongst residents who scampered for safety following heavy gun shots that lasted for hours.

An eye witness who spoke on the condition of anonymity narrated that the hoodlums numbering over eighty, invaded the area, attacking the police B division before proceeding to the INEC office.

Seven utility vehicles and INEC store where generators and other items are parked were set on fire by the hoodlums.

Confirming the incident, the Commissioner of police in the State , Mr Chris Owolabi said the command repelled the attack , thereby preventing the hoodlums from completing their mission.

He said police was still investigation to know the total number of casualties recorded during the gunfire which the security operatives gallantly won.

Mr Owolabi said about six pump actions, IED and other items were recovered from the hoodlums and also demobilized the three Hilux vehicles they came with.

The commissioner of police while asking the residents to go about their lawful business without any fear, gave an assurance that the security operatives are on top of the situation and will win the war.

Also the INEC  Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state , Doctor Nkwachukwu Orji  confirmed that the hoodlums set ablaze the Pavilion and store but noted that the extent of the damage would soon be made public.

He however said the damage was not huge and commended the police and other security agencies for their swift response to the situation.
