Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has described the negative effect of social media as a threat to peace and unity of Nigeria’s young democracy.

While defending the Ministry’s 2021 Budget Proposal before the House of Representatives, the Minister advocated a National Policy on Social Media to reduce fake and misinformation in the country.

Alhaji Mohammed explained that government in the last four years had strengthen efforts in fighting fake news but a lot need to be done to achieve meaningful result in that direction.

Earlier, the Chairman House Committee on Information, Mr. Olusegun Odubunmi stressed the need for more fund to information sector, given the critical role it plays in the nation’s unity and development.

Mr. Odubunmi who commended the Ministry for its decisive approach to the COVID-19 Pandemic said the House would continue to make people oriented laws that would serve the yearning of Nigerians.

This is the second budget since the return of Nigerian Budget Cycle to January-December aimed at fast tracking National Development through effective implementation.
