World Health Organisation -WHO says for Nigeria to remain a polio free nation, there is need to sustain vigilance and surveillance in the border communities.

WHO Country representative, Dr Walter Mulombo stated this during the presentation of the six-year-old last polio victim in Africa to the United Nations Resident Coordinator Edward Kallon in Maiduguri.

Six-year-old Modu Busami was among the four polio cases recorded in Borno state in 2016 which halted the county from being certified polio free. 

Modu Busami who is from an inaccessible community in Monguno local government was first presented with early symptoms when he was 2 years old.

Four years later, Modu is now gradually walking with full hope of become a productive member of the society.

His parents, Bulama Kachalla and Aisha Kolo thanked government agencies and WHO for their support and called on donor agencies to sponsor the education of Modu Busami.

“We don’t have the wherewithal to sponsor the education of this child, we will be exited if he will be given scholarship” 

World Health Organisation County Representative, Dr Walter Mulombo said it is heartwarming to see little Modu, the last polio victim in Africa in good condition.

He congratulated the parents for allowing the child to receive the required vaccine against the virus.

Dr Mulombo called on the federal and state governments not to relent until global eradication is achieved against wild polio virus. 

United Nations Resident Humanitarian Coordinator, Mr Edward Kallon explained that eradication of polio has renewed hope for a better life to victims of the virus.

Mr Kallon called on parents to always avail their children to be vaccinated to prevent any form of resurgence.

UN Chief then presented Modu Busami with a laptop computer.
