President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the Power Sector Reform Coordination Working Group, under the leadership of Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo in a bid to consolidate efforts to fix the sector.
This is made known in a statement by the chairman of the committee, Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State.
The statement says the new Working Group will incorporate the ongoing efforts of his committee and ensure all power sector initiatives are on the same page.
According to the statement, members of the group set up by the National Economic Council (NEC) on Power sector reforms and Distribution Company ownership (DISCOs) comprises Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, representing National Economic Council and Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Special Adviser to the President on Infrastructure, Ahmad Zakari as the Secretary and the Chief of Staff to the President, Malam Abba Kyari, who leads the German Government/Siemens initiative to improve power supply.
Other members of the Group are the Minister of Power, Sale Mamman, Minister of finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed and the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele.
It notes that the National Working Group which is expected to meet weekly is to give the President updates and briefings twice a month on their progress.
The statement says the key objective of the Group is to harmonise various efforts by the federal government and 36 states through NEC, on power sector reform and to verse the design and implementation of a well-coordinated roadmap for the sector.
