The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has dispelled rumour on the conduct of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates, 2021, saying the examination will hold from August 16, 2021, to September 30, 2021.

Responding to publications in some national dailies and online media that WAEC had postponed the May/June 2021 exams, the Acting Head of Public Affairs, WAEC Nigeria, Mr Demianus G. Ojijeogu, in a statement said the Head of Nigeria National Office (HNO), Mr Patrick Areghan, was quoted out of context during a press briefing to announce the release of results of WASSCE for Private Candidates, 2021 – First Series, last week Tuesday.

Ojijeogu further explained that the change in date of the examination, which usually held between May and June to August/September was due to the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the education sector.

According to him, the academic calendar has been distorted as a result of which it will not be possible to have the examination in May/June this year.

He clarified that a convenient international timetable for the conduct of the examination will be released soon.

“The arrangement is in line with the current academic calendar and was done in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education,” he said.
