Senate has held a public hearing on a bill seeking to establish the Federal University of Science and Technology, Korokorosei, in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, as part of efforts to strengthen science and technology education and address Nigeria’s skilled manpower needs.

Declaring the hearing open, President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, represented by Deputy Minority Whip, Senator Ibrahim Mustapha, said the proposed institution must be supported by sustainable funding, adequate facilities and effective administration to achieve its objectives.

Senator Akpabio stressed the need for Nigeria to invest in scientific research and technological innovation to reduce dependence on imported technologies and promote industrial development.

He said the university could also help address environmental challenges and develop solutions in clean energy, agriculture and fisheries, particularly in the Niger Delta.

The sponsor of the bill, Senator Benson Konbowei, said the proposed university would address shortages of skilled professionals in science, technology and other specialised fields.

He added that the institution would provide young people with opportunities to acquire relevant knowledge and skills for national development.

Also speaking, Technical Adviser to the Bayelsa State Governor, Mr Timidi Wariowei, said Korokorosei had existing facilities, including a secondary school, a health centre, hotels and a landing jetty, which could support the proposed institution.

He added that ongoing road construction would improve access to the riverine community.

Earlier, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund, Senator Muntari Dandutse, said the committee would examine the proposed university’s funding, infrastructure, staffing, academic programmes and long-term sustainability before making recommendations.

Stakeholders from Bayelsa State expressed support for the bill, describing it as an opportunity to expand access to science education, develop skilled manpower and accelerate socioeconomic development in the Niger Delta.
