The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Kemi Nandap, has warned officers against corruption and compromise of official procedures, vowing that anyone found culpable will face the full weight of the law.

Nandap gave the warning in Abuja while addressing personnel who gathered at the service’s headquarters to welcome her following President Bola Tinubu’s approval of an 18-month extension of her service.

She urged officers to prioritise Nigerians seeking immigration services by improving service delivery and customer relations, while maintaining strict compliance with security procedures.

The Comptroller-General stressed that the service must remain people-centred, with officers ensuring that applicants receive proper guidance on immigration processes and available services.

“Our service delivery and customer service must always put Nigerians first,” she said.

Nandap, however, cautioned that prioritising citizens must not come at the expense of national security, urging officers to protect the integrity of the service’s processes.

She emphasised the need for transparency, accountability and professionalism, warning that officers who compromise the system would be sanctioned in accordance with the law.

“Do not compromise the system, because any officer caught in such a situation will face the full wrath of the law. I promise you, and that is not an empty threat,” she warned.

Nandap also called on personnel to educate applicants on immigration procedures and explain how they could access the service’s offerings, noting that proper guidance would improve service delivery and help prevent irregularities.

The Comptroller-General expressed appreciation for the reception organised by the personnel, saying she was overwhelmed by the turnout and the show of support.

She described the reception as deeply touching, particularly the sight of officers lining up to welcome her at the headquarters.

The 18-month extension is expected to provide continuity in the leadership of the Nigeria Immigration Service, which is responsible for immigration administration, border management and enforcement of the country’s immigration laws.
