Kano State Consumer Protection Council (KSCPC) has warned sachet water sellers displaying their products along roadsides without adequate protection from direct sunlight to take immediate corrective measures or face sanctions.

The directive is part of the Council’s public enlightenment campaign to educate roadside vendors on the importance of proper storage and handling of drinking water to preserve its quality and protect consumers’ health.

Speaking during a sensitization exercise in Kano, the Director in charge of Quality, Pharmacist Sani Danjuma, who led the Council’s delegation, explained that prolonged exposure to direct sunlight could potentially affect the quality of sachet water.

He noted that excessive heat could affect plastic packaging and potentially cause certain chemical substances to migrate into the water, depending on the packaging material and exposure conditions.

Pharmacist Danjuma urged vendors to provide suitable storage facilities to shield sachet water from direct sunlight and maintain the quality of products offered to consumers.

He explained that the Council was responsible for protecting consumers’ rights by promoting product quality, checking expiry dates and preventing commercial practices that could compromise the safety of goods sold to the public.

The Director warned that the Council would take appropriate action against vendors found violating regulations established to safeguard consumers.

In his remarks, the Executive Secretary of the Council, Dr. Ibrahim Garba Muhammad, said the Council would take necessary measures against vendors who failed to comply with the directive.

He explained that such measures could include prosecution in court and the sealing of business premises, in accordance with the law.

Dr. Muhammad commended the Kano State Government for supporting the Council in carrying out its consumer protection responsibilities across the state.

He also urged traders to comply with relevant laws covering commercial activities and ensure that products offered for sale meet the required quality and safety standards.
