The late Jarman Kauru and former Kaduna State Commissioner for Education, Malam Suleiman Lawal, has been honoured posthumously with an Award of Excellence by Media Organization for his contributions to education, community development and public service in Kaduna State.
The award was presented to his family on Saturday, September 5, 2026, in Zaria, in recognition of his lifelong commitment to educational development and community service.
The Organization said the award followed a recommendation by its editorial department, which highlighted his contributions to community affairs, particularly in Kauru Local Government Area, as well as his support for educational development across Kaduna State.
The newspaper’s award committee said it was satisfied with his record of service to humanity and contributions to various institutions and communities during his lifetime.
Born on September 12, 1948, in Kauru, Malam Suleiman Lawal was a teacher, administrator, civil servant, politician and traditional title holder who devoted much of his life to education and public service.
He began his education at Kauru Primary School and Soba Senior Primary School before proceeding to Sokoto Teachers College. The deceased later obtained an NCE from Advanced Teachers College, Zaria, and a degree in English from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
Malam Suleiman Lawal began his teaching career in the 1960s and rose to become Headmaster of several primary schools before serving as Principal of Government Secondary School, Birnin Gwari, and Kufena College, Zaria.
He later joined the Kaduna State Ministry of Education as a Public Relations Officer before moving to Kaduna State Polytechnic, Zaria, now Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic, where he served as Academic Secretary and later became Rector in 1992.
He also served as Secretary of the Presidential Task Force established to facilitate the completion of projects at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Shika, and the National Eye Centre, Kaduna.
After retiring from public service in 1998, he remained active in politics and public service, serving on the Governing Council of Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri, and later as Federal Commissioner representing Kaduna State at the Federal Character Commission.
He also served as Director-General of the gubernatorial campaign committee of Arc. Namadi Sambo before his appointment as Commissioner for Education, a position he held for three years. From 2013 to 2017, he served on the Governing Council of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
In recognition of his contributions to his community, he was conferred with the traditional title of Jarman Kauru in the early 1980s, which he held until his death on January 3, 2026.
The late Jarman Kauru was also remembered for mentoring people, supporting the vulnerable and helping others gain access to education and employment opportunities.
His eldest son, Alhaji Usman Suleiman Lawal, succeeded him as Jarman Kauru, while his second son, Alhaji Nuraddeen Suleiman Lawal, is the Mayanan Kauru and current Academic Secretary of Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic, Zaria.
The two sons received the award on behalf of the family and expressed appreciation to Taskira Newspaper for honouring their father and recognising his contributions to society.
They also prayed Allah to grant him eternal rest.
The newspaper said the award was aimed at celebrating and preserving the late Jarman Kauru’s legacy of education, leadership, integrity, community service and commitment to humanity.
