The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has stated its resolve to partner with the Katsina State government in strengthening the healthcare system and improving access to quality services for women, children and other vulnerable groups.
As part of that commitment, the agency has handed over three newly renovated and upgraded Primary Health Care Centers in Batagarawa, Daura and Funtua local government areas to the Katsina State Government.
Speaking at the handover ceremony in Bakiyawa village, Batagarawa LGA, the UNICEF Health Manager at Kano Field Office, Dr. Serekeberehan Seyoum, said the upgrades were designed to expand access to quality primary healthcare and improve working conditions for health workers.
“UNICEF remains committed to supporting the state government in strengthening its healthcare system and improving the well-being of residents.
“The successful completion of these projects will enhance health outcomes, particularly for women, children and other vulnerable persons who rely on PHCs for basic services,”
Seyoum explained that the intervention was implemented with support from the Global Fund, with UNICEF serving as implementing partner.
He explained that with the formal handover, responsibility for the management, utilisation and maintenance of the facilities has now been transferred to the Katsina State Primary Health Care Development Agency.
Dr. Seyoum urged the state government and relevant authorities to ensure adequate staffing, steady supply of essential drugs and equipment, and routine maintenance of the centers.
In his remarks, the Executive Secretary of the State PHCDA, Dr. Shehu Abba, said the agency, in collaboration with the benefiting local government councils, would provide the needed equipment and personnel for effective service delivery.
He expressed appreciation to UNICEF and the Global Fund for the intervention, and pledged that the facilities will be equipped with medical supplies to enable residents of Bakiyawa, Dandutse and Sabon Gari have access to quality healthcare services.
In his remarks, the Chairman of Batagarawa Local Government, Alhaji Yahaya Kawo, represented by the Vice Chairman, Abdulrahman Ahmad, gave an assurance that the council will work with community stakeholders to protect, maintain, and ensure full utilisation of the Bakiyawa health facility.
