Volunteer groups across the 10 wards of Tarauni Local Government Area of Kano State have intensified efforts to clear drainage channels and remove refuse blocking waterways to reduce the risk of flooding during the rainy season.

The Chairman of the Association of Volunteer Groups in Tarauni, Ado Salisu Bashir, disclosed this while leading members in clearing drainage channels across three communities along Layin Dagaci.

Bashir said the exercise was aimed at ensuring the free flow of rainwater by removing refuse and other materials obstructing drainage channels.

He explained that the exercise would be extended to other wards and communities across the local government area, with volunteers working alongside residents to promote environmental cleanliness and protect homes and roads from flooding.

The chairman urged residents to stop dumping refuse into drainage channels, describing the practice as one of the major causes of blocked waterways and flooding. He also called for regular environmental sanitation and prompt reporting of drainage channels requiring urgent attention.

Bashir appreciated Kano State Governor, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf; the Chairman of Tarauni LGA, Ahmed Ibrahim Muhammad; and the Ministries of Environment and Rural Development for providing equipment to support the volunteers’ sanitation activities.

The Village Head of Unguwa Uku, Alhaji Mahe Muhammad, commended the volunteers for their commitment and sacrifice. He urged residents to take collective responsibility for environmental cleanliness and flood prevention rather than leaving the task to volunteer groups alone.
