Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has commended the Federal Government for its intervention in the Kafinchiri Irrigation Project.
The Governor made the commendation while inspecting sections of the irrigation development works at the Kafinchiri Dam alongside Senator Kawu Sumaila, representing Kano South Senatorial District.
He describe it as a major step towards boosting dry-season farming and improving the livelihoods of thousands of farmers in the state.
The project is being implemented through the intervention of the Federal and Kano State Governments.
Governor Yusuf said completion of the project would enable farmers to engage in year-round agricultural activities, increase food production, create economic opportunities and strengthen the livelihoods of farming communities.
He urged the contractor handling the project to intensify efforts and ensure quality execution within the stipulated timeframe.
The Governor stressed the need for the project to be durable and capable of meeting the needs of the benefiting communities.
Governor Abba Kabir appreciated Federal Government for its intervention, saying the project would complement his administration’s efforts to expand irrigation farming and promote sustainable agricultural development.
He reiterated his commitment to working with relevant organisations and stakeholders to expand irrigation infrastructure and support food security and economic growth.
Earlier, Senator Kawu Sumaila said the Kafinchiri Dam was constructed in 1976 for irrigation purposes but had not been fully utilised over the years.
He explained that the dam is among three selected for rehabilitation and irrigation development through funding from the Ecological Project Office.
Senator Sumaila added that its rehabilitation would unlock agricultural potential and provide farmers with greater opportunities for dry-season farming.
