Academic activities at the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, have been disrupted following an indefinite strike declared by lecturers of the institution.
The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Nasarawa State University, Keffi Branch, Dr Zubairu Loko, disclosed this in a telephone interview with Radio Nigeria.
Dr Loko said the strike was total and comprehensive, following the failure of the university authorities and the state government to address several outstanding welfare issues affecting the lecturers.
He said the lecturers were being owed arrears of more than three billion naira arising from unpaid Earned Academic Allowance, the implementation of the minimum wage, as well as the recently approved salary increment for academic staff of universities by the Federal Government.
The ASUU Chairman explained that the union had held several meetings with the university management, governing council and the state government to demand payment of the outstanding entitlements, but that the efforts had yielded no positive result.
Dr Loko said the lecturers were left with no option but to withdraw their services until their demands were addressed.
He stressed that members would remain away from their duty posts, including the supervision of theses and research works, until the issues were resolved.
