The Senate has donated N50 million to the families of five security personnel and teachers who lost their lives during the rescue operation of abducted schoolchildren in Oriire, Oyo State.

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, announced the donation during plenary in Abuja on Wednesday.

He said each of the bereaved families would receive N10 million as support from the Senate.

According to Akpabio, the Senate leadership decided to provide the assistance after deliberating on the sacrifices made by those who lost their lives during the operation.

He particularly paid tribute to a young military officer who reportedly died at the age of 28 while participating in the rescue mission.

The Senate President said the donation would be shared among the families of the two teachers and three security operatives who died in the operation.

He subsequently directed the Senate Leader, Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, to lead a delegation of senators to deliver the support to the affected families.

The Senate had on Tuesday adopted a motion commending the rescue operation and urged the Federal Government to sustain similar strategies to secure other Nigerians still being held captive in different parts of the country.

Akpabio expressed optimism that the ongoing efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would help achieve lasting peace and stability across the country.
