The Kano State Ministry of Livestock Development says plans have reached advanced state for the commencement of Phase I of its Avian Influenza Control Programme.

Avian Influenza, commonly known as bird flu, is a highly contagious viral disease that affects poultry and can cause sudden outbreaks with high mortality rates, leading to severe economic losses for farmers and disruptions in the livestock sector.

The Commissioner for Livestock Development, Dr. Aliyu Isah , said the initiative forms part of the state government’s proactive efforts to prevent and manage potential outbreaks across Kano and neighbouring areas.

According to him, the control programme is designed to focus on prevention, early detection, improved biosecurity practices, and rapid response to any suspected cases.

“The programme will help prevent outbreaks, protect poultry farmers, safeguard public health, and enhance food security in Kano State and beyond,” the Commissioner said.

Dr. Aliyu reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to implementing effective disease prevention and control strategies to ensure sustainable livestock development and strengthen the poultry industry.

He noted that the creation of the Kano State Ministry of Livestock Development demonstrates the commitment of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to strengthening livestock management, improving disease control systems, and supporting farmers’ livelihoods.

The Commissioner also expressed appreciation to the Governor for his continued support and leadership in advancing livestock development and protecting the agricultural economy of the state.

The programme is expected to play a critical role in reducing the risk of avian influenza outbreaks and ensuring the long-term stability of poultry production in Kano State.
