Kano State Ministry of Livestock Development has commenced the 2026 annual Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP) vaccination campaign, targeting 1.5 million cattle to improve animal health and boost livestock productivity.

The statewide exercise was officially flagged off in Bunkure under the leadership of the Honourable Commissioner for Livestock Development, Dr. Aliyu Isa Aliyu.

Represented by Dr. Abubakar of the Department of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology, the Commissioner explained that the vaccination campaign would cover all 44 Local Government Areas of Kano State as part of efforts to control and eliminate the highly contagious livestock disease.

He described the establishment of the Livestock Development Ministry by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf as a testament to the administration’s commitment to strengthening livestock production, improving animal health, and safeguarding public health.

Dr. Aliyu Isa Aliyu explained that  CBPP as a serious disease that weakens cattle, causes weight loss, reduces milk production, lowers meat quality, and can lead to death in severe cases, posing significant economic risks to livestock farmers and affecting food security.

He called on livestock farmers, herders, and stakeholders to cooperate fully with veterinary officials by presenting their cattle for vaccination, stressing that collective efforts are essential to preventing the spread of the disease.

He maintained that the vaccination campaign would help ensure the availability of healthy livestock products, especially as the holy month of Ramadan approaches, when demand for safe and quality meat increases.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the livestock sector and ensuring sustainable animal health through proactive disease prevention programmes.
