The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Upper Benue River Basin Development Authority UBRBDA, Dr. Mahmud Sanusi Mohammed, has introduced a cost-effective engineering solution to protect the access road at the Lake Geriyo Irrigation Project from seasonal erosion.

The initiative followed his inspection of the irrigation project, where he assessed challenges affecting infrastructure, particularly the recurring wash-away of the access road during heavy rainfall.

To address the problem, the Authority is deploying an innovative method that involves the use of discarded vehicle tyres filled with crushed stones and gravel.

The tyres are arranged in an interlocking pattern to form a reinforced erosion-control and drainage stabilisation structure.

The technique is designed to reduce the force of surface runoff, improve ground stability, and prevent scouring and displacement of road materials during the rainy season.

Officials say the approach is environmentally friendly, as it promotes the reuse of waste materials while significantly reducing construction costs.

It is also expected to enhance the durability of the access road and guarantee year-round access to the irrigation facilities.

The MD/CEO further Told Radio Nigeria that Work on the project is ongoing, reflecting management’s commitment to practical, field-driven solutions aimed at safeguarding critical infrastructure and strengthening sustainable irrigation operations in the region.
