Federal University Gusau (FUGUS) has signed a landmark research collaboration agreement with Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Malaysia, aimed at boosting cutting-edge research and global academic cooperation.

This is contained in a statement by the spokesperson of the University, Malam Jamilu Ibrahim and made available to Radio Nigeria in Gusau

According to the statement, the three-year agreement, which focuses on chemical and pharmacological investigations of medicinal natural products from Nigeria, was formally signed on Monday, January 26, 2026, in Malaysia.

It says the agreement was endorsed by the Vice Chancellor of UiTM, Professor. Datuk Ts. while the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Gusau, Professor. Mu’azu Abubakar Gusau, signed on behalf of the University.

Under the terms of the agreement, UiTM will provide advanced expertise in comprehensive metabolite profiling and fingerprinting of samples, co-supervise MSc and PhD students with FUGUS, and jointly produce academic, industrial, and commercial research outputs.

Similarly, UiTM will also make available research facilities and materials, subject to existing research grants.

On its part, the Federal University Gusau will supply authenticated medicinal natural products from Nigeria for the research, co-supervise postgraduate students with UiTM, and collaborate in producing academic and industry-oriented outputs.

He statement points that, Federal University Gusau will also provide facilities and research materials based on available funding.

Further more, For the effective implementation of the collaboration, UiTM has appointed Associate Professor Dr. Fatimah Salim as Project Leader, supported by other designated personnel.

Similarly, FUGUS named Associate Professor Maryam Kemi Gafar as Project Leader, alongside other academic staff to be assigned as project members.

Both institutions agreed that the designated Project Leaders will serve as Principal Researchers for the duration of the project.

It says the signing of the historic agreement underscores the commitment of the Vice Chancellor, Professor. Mu’azu Abubakar Gusau, and his administration to repositioning the Federal University Gusau as an emerging centre of excellence in research, innovation, and global academic engagement.

The collaboration is expected to enhance research capacity, promote postgraduate training, and foster impactful discoveries in natural product science that will benefit both Nigeria and the global scientific community.
