The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Kano State Command, has arrested two young men for allegedly attempting to smuggle illicit drugs, including Indian hemp, to inmates at the Nomansland Court Complex in Kano.

The suspects, identified as Usman Khalid, 25, and Bello Musa Ahmed, 24, both residents of the Tsamiya (Brigade) area of Kano metropolis, were apprehended by officers of the NCoS attached to the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC), Goron Dutse.

According to a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, Musbahu Lawan, the suspects were arrested while attempting to throw Indian hemp and other prohibited substances to inmates during court proceedings at the Nomansland Court Complex.

The statement explained that the arrest followed heightened vigilance by correctional officers deployed to secure inmates during transportation to and from court sittings a period often exploited by criminal elements to breach security.

The NCoS warned members of the public against intermingling with inmates, especially during court appearances, stressing that such actions constitute serious security breaches and are punishable under the law.

The Controller of the Kano State Command, Ado Inuwa, has directed that the suspects, along with the recovered substances, be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for thorough investigation and prosecution.

He emphasized that the Service would not tolerate any act capable of undermining its mandate or compromising security within custodial facilities and court premises.

The Command further reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on drug-related activities and urged members of the public to cooperate with security agencies to ensure the maintenance of law and order across Kano State.
