The Kano State House of Assembly (KNHA) has taken a major step toward strengthening the state’s education system by introducing a bill that seeks to enforce the use of mother tongue, particularly the Hausa language, as a medium of instruction in schools across the state.
The proposed legislation, titled Kano State Mother Tongue (Hausa Language) Education Enforcement Bill, was sponsored by the member representing Takai Constituency, Musa Ali Kachako.
Presenting the bill during plenary, Kachako argued that the initiative aligns with global educational standards, noting that many advanced nations including China, Japan, and India have recorded significant progress in science, technology, and mathematics through the use of their indigenous languages in early education.
He explained that adopting Hausa as the primary language of instruction would enhance comprehension, reduce failure rates, and curb school dropouts, while also preserving cultural identity and promoting inclusivity in learning.
“Producing a document backed by law will not only add value to education but also strengthen the foundation of learning and make science and technology subjects easier for students to understand.”
After careful deliberations, the House referred the bill to the Standing Committee on Education for further legislative scrutiny and recommendations.
In a related development, the member representing Gabasawa Constituency, Zakariyya Abdullahi Nuhu, presented a motion seeking the establishment of a College of Agriculture in his constituency.
He explained that the proposed institution would boost agricultural education and economic activities, as over sixty percent of residents across the eleven wards in Gabasawa are farmers.
Meanwhile, the House also acknowledged a letter from the state executive requesting approval for the establishment of a new polytechnic in Gaya Local Government Area, as well as the creation of a Kano Local Governments Service Commission.
The Speaker referred the proposals to the relevant legislative unit for necessary action.
