A non-governmental organization, Rays Heaven for Special Needs Children and Adults, has held a community engagement program in Kaduna to promote mental health awareness and address economic challenges affecting vulnerable groups.

The Program Manager, Sadiq Abdilatif, said the initiative, known as the Youth Resilience Project is being funded by the European Union in partnership with the Global Youth Mobilization Fund.

He explained that the project focuses on enlightening schools, communities, and internally displaced persons on the importance of mental health, encouraging young people to speak up about emotional struggles, and helping teachers and community leaders to provide proper guidance.

Mr. Abdilatif noted that many youths, persons with disabilities, and IDPs in Kaduna face both mental and economic difficulties that limit their productivity. He said the training aims to build confidence and create a network of participants who will take the message back to their communities.

He added that the organization plans to involve traditional and religious leaders in sustaining awareness at the grassroots, describing mental health as a collective responsibility that requires everyone’s participation.

One of the participants, Salma Hussaini, a visually impaired lady, commended the organizers for including persons with disabilities. She said the program has helped her understand how mental strength and self-belief can help overcome emotional challenges despite physical limitations.
