Nigerian Women for Agricultural Progressive and Development Initiative (NWAPDI), Zamfara State Chapter, has called on government, institutions, organisations, and individuals to take bold action towards addressing hunger and malnutrition in society.
The Coordinator of the Initiative, Hajiya Shafa’atu Habibu Tsafe, made the call during an event to mark this year’s World Food Day held in Gusau.
The programme, organised in collaboration with the Zamfara State Ministry of Agriculture, brought together women farmers and other stakeholders in the agricultural sector.
Hajiya Shafa’atu Habibu emphasized the need for increased campaigns and awareness on issues of hunger, food security, and access to nutritious food across the state and the country.
“World Food Day provides an opportunity to raise awareness on the challenges of accessing adequate and nutritious food. We must continue to take proactive steps to eradicate hunger within our communities,” she stated.
She explained that World Food Day was established in 1945 by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations to promote collective action for those who suffer from hunger and to ensure food security and nutritious diets for all.
In his remark, Zamfara State Commissioner for Agriculture, Yau Haruna Gamji, assured that the state government has made adequate provisions in the 2026 budget to support farmers.
He noted that the administration of Governor Dauda Lawal has continued to empower women farmers and will intensify such efforts to enhance agricultural productivity across the state.
Earlier, the wife of the Zamfara State Governor, Hajiya Huriyya Dauda Lawal, represented by the wife of the Deputy Governor, Hajiya Rukayya Mani Malam Mumini, reaffirmed her commitment to empowering women farmers by helping them access improved seeds, modern tools, and financial support.
She urged women farmers to continue to work hard to strengthen the nation’s food security, adding that collaboration among farmers, government, private sector, and communities would make Zamfara a leading example of food sufficiency and resilience.
Highlights of the event included cultural displays showcasing the importance of farming, as well as an exhibition of farm produce.
