In a move aimed at addressing water scarcity and improving the welfare of corps members, the Kaduna State Rural Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Agency RUWASA, has commissioned a solar-powered motorized borehole at the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC Orientation Camp in Kurmin Mashi Kaduna.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Director General of RUWASA, Engineer Shehu Ladan, said the project was constructed to provide potable water for corps members who spend about three to four weeks at the camp during their orientation exercise.
Engineer Ladan explained that the agency embarked on the project following a request from the NYSC management, noting that the camp had been experiencing persistent water shortages, especially during peak periods when new batches of corps members arrive.
According to him, “We are here today to commission and hand over the newly constructed solar motorized borehole which has been built for the benefit of youth corps members, particularly those who stay here during their orientation period. The NYSC camp receives about six batches of corps members every year, and there has been a shortage of potable water in the camp. That is why this intervention was necessary.”
The RUWASA boss emphasized that the project was executed under the directive of the Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, as part of efforts to ensure access to safe and clean water across institutions and communities in the state.
“This project is one of the many facilities provided through the instrumentality of His Excellency, the Governor of Kaduna State. It is the first solar borehole constructed for the NYSC camp, and we hope it will go a long way in easing the water challenges faced by corps members,” he stated.
Engineer Ladan urged the corps members and camp management to take full responsibility for the maintenance and protection of the facility, warning against vandalism, theft, or misuse.
“As a government, we have played our part by providing this essential facility. It is now left for the camp community to ensure proper care and sustainability of the borehole so it can continue to serve its purpose for a long time,” he advised.
Responding, the Kaduna State NYSC Coordinator, Mrs. Efeke Murna Dadaza appreciated government and RUWASA in particular for bringing sucor to water situation in the Camp
The newly commissioned solar-powered borehole is expected to significantly improve water availability at the Kaduna NYSC Camp, enhancing hygiene, sanitation, and overall comfort for corps members during their stay.
