Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared a two-week warning strike beginning on Monday, 13th October, 2025, following the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government on September 28.

The National President of the Union, Professor Chris Piwuna, who made the announcement at a press briefing in Abuja, said the strike will be total and comprehensive.

He directed all branches of ASUU to withdraw their services with effect from midnight on Sunday.

“Consequently, all branches of ASUU are hereby directed to withdraw their voices with effect from midnight, 12:01am, on Monday, 13th October 2025. The warning strike shall be total and comprehensive as agreed at the last NEC meeting.” He said

Professor Piwuna explained that the industrial action was inevitable as the government had not made enough effort to address their demands.

Some of ASUU‘s demands from the government include the conclusion of the renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement, the release of the withheld three-and-a-half months’ salaries, sustainable funding of public universities, revitalisation of universities, and cessation of the victimisation of lecturers in LASU, KSU (now Prince Abubakar Audu University) and FUTO.

Others are the payment of the outstanding 25-35% salary arrears, the payment of promotion arrears for over four years, and the release of withheld third-party deductions such as cooperative contributions and union check-off dues.
