As part of activities to commemorate World Contraception Day, the Kano State Ministry of Health, in collaboration with Integrate Project, has urged residents to embrace birth spacing as a key strategy for improving maternal and child health.

Speaking in Kano, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, reaffirmed government’s commitment to strengthening the health sector with particular focus on women and children’s well-being.

Dr. Abubakar explained that birth spacing is vital for reducing maternal mortality and ensuring healthier families, especially in Kano the most populous state in Northern Nigeria.

He disclosed that recent findings show women in the state give birth to an average of five to eleven children, a trend that underscores the urgency of promoting planned childbirth.

He stressed that family planning should not be misconstrued as a limitation on the number of children, but rather as a means of safeguarding the health and quality of life of mothers and their families.

He also called on the media to intensify public sensitization on the benefits of family planning.

This year’s World Contraception Day is themed.“A Choice for All – Agency, Intention, Access”, highlighting the importance of empowering individuals with knowledge, freedom, and access to reproductive health services.
