As Nigeria marks its 65th Independence Anniversary, the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Transportation, Daura, Katsina State, Professor Umar Adam Katsayal, MNI, has highlighted significant progress recorded in the nation’s transport sector.

Speaking in an interview with Radio Nigeria Kaduna, Professor Katsayal recalled that prior to independence, Nigeria’s road infrastructure was limited to single-lane highways, with no dual carriageways.

He noted that since independence, successive governments have expanded the road network with dual carriageways, interconnecting routes, and modern flyovers across major towns and cities.

On air transport, the Vice Chancellor explained that in the pre-independence era, airports existed only in Lagos and Kano. Today, however, almost every state in the federation boasts an airport, with ongoing plans to establish more cargo airports to support trade and commerce.

Professor Katsayal further pointed to improvements in maritime and rail transportation.

He said Nigeria has continued to expand its seaport infrastructure while the railway system has grown far beyond what was inherited from colonial authorities.

According to him, efforts are underway to extend the railway line into the Republic of Niger, while the creation of dry ports is enhancing the handling and distribution of goods.

The Vice Chancellor also underscored the establishment of the Federal University of Transportation in Daura—the first of its kind in Africa—as a major milestone for advancing research, training, and innovation in the sector.

Congratulating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, the leadership of the National Assembly, and the Ministers of Transportation and Education on the Independence Anniversary, Professor Katsayal called on Nigerians to continue to pray for peace, security, and economic prosperity.
