Governor Dauda Lawal has approved the establishment of the Zamfara State Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) Board, in fulfilment of his administration’s commitment to social welfare and inclusive governance.
The Secretary State Government, Malam Abubakar Mohammad Nakwada announced this In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media Sulaiman Ahmad Tudu.
He said the move followed the recent amendment of the state law designed to safeguard the rights of persons with disabilities, protect them from discrimination, and promote equal access to opportunities in all spheres of society.
Abubakar Nakwada explained that, the amended law introduced key changes which include replacing the designation of “Chairman” with “Executive Chairman,” “Executive Secretary” with “Secretary,” and converting part-time members into full-time members.
According to him, the Governor also mandated that, members of the board must be persons with disabilities to ensure its activities genuinely reflect the interests of the targeted groups.
Governor Lawal has appointed Alhaji Usman Ahmed Nahuche, a retired Permanent Secretary and member of the Deaf cluster, as the pioneer Executive Chairman of the Board.
Other appointees to the Board are Hajiya Amina B.M. Audu (Spinal Cord Injury cluster), Tukur Abdullahi (Deaf cluster), Babangida Umar Shinkafi (Physically Challenged cluster), Umar Babangida Ahmed (Blind cluster), Binta Namadi (Representative of Women), and Sani Abubakar (Member).
The establishment of the Board, according to the Governor, reflects his administration’s unwavering commitment to social justice, equity, and inclusivity.
He stressed that, persons with disabilities possess unique talents and potential that should be harnessed for the overall progress and development of Zamfara State.
Governor Lawal urged the newly appointed members to work diligently towards improving the living standards of PWDs across the state.
He also appreciated development partners and stakeholders who supported the law’s amendment process, assuring them of his administration’s readiness to sustain collaborations that will enhance the well-being of all citizens.
