Federal Government has been urged to proscribe the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and the Petroleum Tanker Drivers’ Union over alleged extortion of motorists across the country.

Kaduna State Chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Alhaji Nuhu Aminu, made the appeal in an interview in Kaduna.

Alhaji Aminu alleged that the two unions had extorted billions of naira over the years without making any meaningful contribution to the nation’s socio-economic development.

He accused them of forcing registration on members for selfish interests and denying the Federal Government revenues needed for vital projects, while also disrupting the oil sector with unnecessary industrial actions.

The AFAN chairman recalled that during the administration of the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, such unions were effectively checked, which facilitated the smooth distribution of petroleum products at affordable prices nationwide.
