‎The Federal Government has expressed sadness over the tragic boat mishap in the Borgu area of Niger State, which claimed the lives of about 32 people.

‎Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris,Said “This tragedy is particularly painful coming barely four months after devastating floods wreaked havoc in Mokwa, also in Niger State. We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims, the Government, and the people of Niger State. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who have been affected by this tragedy.”

‎He noted that the Federal Government, through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), will provide the necessary support to the victims’ families and survivors, working closely with the Niger State Government to ensure prompt relief and assistance.

‎The Minister commended Niger State Government, through the State Emergency Management Agency, for its swift rescue operation, which ensured that all passengers of the ill-fated boat were accounted for.

‎Idris also urged Nigerians to prioritize safety when travelling on inland waterways, stressing that no one should embark on such journeys without wearing protective jackets.

The Minister noted that Federal Government has directed the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to mount a nationwide sensitization campaign to raise awareness on safety measures for waterways transportation.

‎He prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and wished the survivors a speedy recovery.
