The Zamfara State House of Assembly has reinstated the suspended member representing Talata Mafara North Constituency, Shamsudeen Hassan Basko, following his written apology to the House.

This development was confirmed in a statement issued to newsmen by the Press Secretary to the House, Bello Madaro in Gusau.

During plenary, the Speaker of the House, Alhaji Bilyaminu Ismail Moriki, read the contents of Basko’s apology letter and subsequently sought the collective decision of the House in which Members unanimously resolved in favour of lifting the suspension.

The Speaker emphasized the House’s openness to receiving similar letters of apology from the remaining seven suspended members, noting that such steps would pave the way for their reinstatement and promote unity within the legislative body.

Several members took turns contributing to the debate, expressing support for Basko’s reinstatement.

They welcomed him back to the chamber and urged the remaining suspended members to emulate his actions in the interest of legislative harmony and the overall development of their constituencies and the state.

In his brief remarks, Shamsudeen Hassan Basko expressed deep appreciation to the House for the opportunity to return.

Basko pledged full adherence to the Assembly’s ethics, discipline and vowed to distance himself from any group or influence attempting to undermine the integrity and authority of the legislature.

It will be recalled that on February 26, 2024, the House, following a motion moved by the Majority Leader, Bello Mazawaje, suspended eight members over violations of the Standing Orders of the Assembly (Order 10, Rule 9).

The disciplinary action was based on alleged misconduct, including the forceful entry into the offices of the Clerk and Sergeant-at-Arms, unlawful sitting, obstruction of legislative processes, and conduct deemed unbecoming of lawmakers.
