Governor Dauda Lawal has indefinitely banned all political activities and rallies across Zamfara State.
This information was conveyed by the Senior Special Assistant on Broadcast Media, Press, and Public Affairs to the Governor, Mustapha Jafaru Kaura, in a statement issued to newsmen in Gusau.
The statement highlights that the ban is a response to the current security situation in the state, particularly following a recent security breach in the Maru local government area.
It also notes that considering the political season has not yet begun nationwide, the state government decided to implement this measure.
“This is to inform the public, particularly politicians across all political divides in the state, that due to the precarious security situation, including the recent incident in Maru local government area, and the fact that the political season has not yet kicked off across the country, the Executive Governor of the state, Dr. Dauda Lawal, has banned all political activities and rallies in the state until further notice,” the statement reads.
According to the statement, the ban takes immediate effect.
In addition, security agencies in the state have been instructed to take action against any politician or group that does not comply with the directives.
Zamfara State continues to grapple with significant security challenges, primarily due to the activities of armed groups commonly referred to as bandits. These groups have been involved in various criminal activities, including kidnappings for ransom, attacks on communities, and illegal mining operations.
In December 2024, the Federal Government lifted a five year ban on mining activities in Zamfara citing improved security conditions. The ban, imposed in 2019 due to frequent bandit attacks, was lifted to revitalize the state’s mining sector, rich in gold, lithium, and copper.
However, Governor Dauda Lawal recently told the World Bank that the government was making steady progress in the fight against banditry in Zamfara State.
