The House of Representatives has adopted the report of the Conference Committee on a bill to establish the Southwest Development Commission.
Presenting the report on the House floor on behalf of the committee members, Ogun State representative Mr. Ibrahim Ayokunle Isiaka stated that once established, the commission will be responsible for receiving and managing funds from the Federation Account.
He Maintained that the Southwest Development Commission would also manage donations and gifts for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of infrastructure damaged by ecological, environmental, and other developmental challenges in the region.
The lawmaker further confirmed that once fully established, the commission would boost funding for agricultural production, human capital development, youth employment, and other related developmental initiatives.
Mr Ibrahim Ayokunle Isyaku, said the Southwest Development Commission is complement of the Niger Delta Development Commission, North East Development Commission, South South Development Commission, South East Development Commission to ensure equitable distribution of resources.
He explained that as members of the two chambers of the National Assembly have unanimously adopted the report of the harmonized committee a clean copy of the document will be transmitted to the President for assent.
The report which received overwhelming support from members of the green chambers from different parts of the country has clearly indicated the need for the establishment of the regional commissions for various developmental purposes.
The house has adjourned it’s plenary session to 28 January, to allow members and Chairmen of standing committees concentrate on the 2025 budget currently going on with officials of the MDAs.
