President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed the resilience of African democracy while pledging Nigeria’s unwavering support for Ghana during the swearing-in ceremony of President John Dramani Mahama.
Speaking as the special guest of honour at the event in Accra on January 7, 2025, Tinubu lauded Ghana’s democratic progress and emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation within the African continent.
In his address, Tinubu praised Ghana’s peaceful transition of power, describing it as a testament to the nation’s commitment to democracy.
“This moment does more than symbolise another milestone in the evolution of Ghanaian democratic society. It lays to bed the question of whether Ghana and Africa are capable of democratic and productive endeavours,” Tinubu said.
Highlighting the shared struggles and aspirations of African nations, Tinubu called for solidarity against external forces that seek to divide the continent.
He drew inspiration from Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, and Nigeria’s founding leaders, noting their vision of unity and progress for the region.
Tinubu also expressed confidence in President Mahama’s leadership, describing him as “a man of patriotic vision and substance” and pledging Nigeria’s readiness to collaborate with Ghana on shared goals.
“Your new president… believes that your nation has a mission and intends for you all to fulfil it. No one can ask more of a leader than that,” Tinubu remarked.
Tinubu urged President Mahama’s administration to prioritize regional integration and tackle pressing challenges, including poverty, youth unemployment, and instability.
He expressed hope for strengthened ties between Nigeria and Ghana, underscoring the importance of subregional progress for the broader African agenda.
President Tinubu also extended his blessings to Ghana and the African continent, calling for a future filled with hope and prosperity.
The inauguration, attended by dignitaries and leaders from across Africa, marked a significant moment in Ghana’s democratic journey and reaffirmed the longstanding bond between Nigeria and Ghana.
